5 Priorities

Winning job security and improved conditions for members in collective agreements

  • Strengthened managing change clauses that prevent redundancy where the work continues, and provide genuine redeployment options
  • Permanent jobs for casual staff based on the conversion of casual work to secure employment and tighter definitions of what is genuinely casual employment
  • Casual and sessional staff paid for all work performed alongside access to paid sick leave
  • Longer contracts and stronger conversion provisions for fixed-term staff including research staff
  • Binding collective agreement protections for academic and intellectual freedom
  • Salary increases which keep up with the cost of living
  • Quantifiable and effective limits on workloads with improved transparency and accountability
  • Paid gender affirmation leave
  • Maintain Indigenous employment targets

National Campaign to Rebuild the Higher Education Sector

  • Public funding of tertiary education to be no less than 1% of GDP and reversal of the inequitable Jobs Ready Graduates funding and fee changes
  • No Ministerial intervention in research grant allocations
  • Continued support for NTEU members on University Senates and Councils and the convening of a National Conference on University Governance Reform
  • Senate and State Government Enquiries into university governance and finances, including the setting and appropriateness of Vice-Chancellor and Senior Executive pay

A Local Workplace Focus

  • Training, communications and ongoing support for local workplace delegates including financial support for casual delegates
  • Biennial National Conferences of local workplace delegates
  • Better access to communications with members for local workplace delegates
  • Stronger links between Branch Organisers and local workplace delegates
  • Ensure that NTEU members receive high quality advice about their industrial rights

Effective Representation for All Members

  • Ensure that members in TAFE, Private Providers, Research Institutes and Adult Education have strong collective bargaining agreements and have a voice in the Union’s State Divisions and National Council
  • More systematic use of the Fair Work Commission and the Federal Court in the legal enforcement of members’ rights, including aggressive prosecution of individual and systemic underpayment of wages (particularly for casuals)
  • Modernised communications focused on members’ interests and needs
  • More timely and thorough responses to member grievances and disputes

Healthy and safe workplaces

  • Use WHS laws to hold employers to account for the mental health illness caused by management decisions, including excessive workloads and recurring change management processes
  • Provide high quality WHS information and training to members and health and safety representatives
  • Campaign for the right to disconnect and working from home flexibility for professional staff
  • Compulsory workplace safety training for NTEU staff and paid elected officials
